Wars have been started over far less than a gateway to another world full of resources and whatever else of value there is. Instead we got the US being a mustache twirling failure of a minor antagonist. They could have still had the Japanese as the ones in command and it would've been fine. JSDF and US forces working together on the other side would've been great and the Japan would 100% have called it's allies (like the US) for aid after that first attack instead of trying to solo it. I really wish GATE wasn't written by a super duper ultra-nationalist with a massive raging hateboner for the US. I would expect that to be dealt with MUCH more harshly than it was in the show/manga. It was also revealed those cockholsters took Japanese slaves for forced labor and sex slaves when they came out of the gate to Japan.
You use overwhelming force and make them realize they are helpless against you to the point that they don't even fuck with locals that are friendly with you. So you're supposed to handicap yourself to the level of your enemy who is trying to kill you so they can take your lands, rob and enslave your people, and rape your women? These same people who are even trying to do the same shit to their own people at that point in the show? What kind of faggot hippie bullshit is that? You slaughter them like the beasts they are and make it abundantly clear that shit won't be tolerated. China could try to start a bloody war with the west over access to the gate or they could make the triple digit IQ move of realizing that this is a great opportunity to compete earth side against a now very distracted west instead of starting a fight they likely cant finish. Legitimately, who else has enough shit just laying around to invade an entire other planet at the drop of a hat? Hell, thered probably be less shenanigans from eastern powers than in the show too. On paper itd be an international coalition but practically itd probably be a japanese-US force with the US footing the lions share of the bill and providing the majority of men and materiel while incorporating a token level of involvement from other foreign countries. IMO theyd probably repulse the immediate threat, realize theres an entire goddamn world on the other side with who knows what literally magical threats, secure a beachhead, and bring the US in.
Japan would simply lack the force projection, manpower, and will to be able to suddenly pivot to prolonged military subjection and occupation of the other world.
